History of the All Blacks

The first NZ team was selected in 1884, for a tour in NSW, Australia.


The team played it's first match against Wellington xv before getting eight wins in eight matches in Australia. Otago prop James Allen who played eight matches for the 1884 team - he has been called the All Blacks no.1.

The 1888-89 natives team that played 102 matches in a marathon tour of N.Z and Australia and U.K. was not an official team. This helped the NZ rugby team to be known around the world.

In 1893 the first N.Z official team was selected for an 11 match tour to Australia. The team only lost once, to NSW in Sydney in 1894.

An official NZ team hosted a visiting team from NSW Australia, in Canterbury - the game was won 8-6 by the visitors.

In 1893 NZ beat Queensland at Wellington to record it's first home win against a visiting team. In 1903 NZ played it's first test match against Australia in Sydney. NZ scored 3 trys to 1 in a
23-3 win.

In 1904 NZ played it's first test match in NZ beating a great Britain team 9-3 in Wellington.
