These guards are known as 'Beefeaters'. They guard the Queen at Buckingham Palace, and they have to stand very still. It is most likely that they got their name from the old days when they were paid with beef instead of money.
My grandma was watching 'The Changing of the Guards' when it started raining…she squeezed into the little box behind the guard so she wouldn't get her hairdo wet. Then the guard got the order to go back into his little box, which he did… jamming my grandma in behind him. As you said, the guards have to stand VERY still. When my grandfather came back, he couldn't find my grandma until he saw her little hand waving out from behind the soldier! The soldier stood very still but he did wink at my grandfather! My grandma was stuck behind him for half an hour!
